William Walter Hoey
Died peacefully at age 73 in Kamuela, Hawaii, on October 31st, 2004.
A long time Marin resident, Bill was born in Portland, Oregon, and raised in Eugene. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1958. After a few years as a lumber broker in San Francisco, he became a commercial and industrial real estate developer in Marin in the early nineteen-sixties. He founded the William Hoey Company, which was involved in the expansion of Northgate One and Northgate and Hamilton Industrial Parks. He married Loretta (Laurie) Meyer in 1960.
Bill was active in big game fishing, competing in tournaments around the world. A high point in Bill's life was his team's victory in the 1992 Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament. During the last 30 years of his life, he was active in the International Game Fish Association (IGFA), a pelagic game fish conservation organization. At the time of his death, he was an international representative for the IGFA.
Bill is survived by his spouse, Laurie; sons Matt of Phoenix, Arizona, and Bart of Sausalito; daughter Dana Hoey and her spouse, Oliver Wasow, of New York City; grandchildren Henry and Iris Hoey-Wasow, and brothers Jack of Glen Ellen and Henry of Pleasanton.
On November 15th, Bill's ashes were scattered in the ocean off Hawaii after a short Memorial Service. Donations in his memory may be made to the International Game Fish Association, 300 Gulf Stream Way, Dania Beach, Florida 33004.
