1911-1915: Named Deputy State Superintendent of Insurance.

14 November 1933: President Roosevelt appointed James J. Hoey as Collector of Internal Revenue for the 2nd district of New York, the richest tax producing area of the country, south of 23rd street in Manhattan. This appointement came soon after James' unsuccessful campaign for Borough President on the Recovery Party ticket with Joseph V. McKee.

1934: The first Catholic Interracial Council was established in New York by a Rhode Islander, Jesuit Father John LaFarge. James J. Hoey was founder and first president of the Catholic Interracial Council of New York.

24 August 1934: Mother Catherine Hoey dies at family residence at 135 Central Park West, New York City. Funeral at St. Paul the Apostle, 59th St and Columbus Ave, Tuesday morning 28 August. Burial at Calvary Cemetery.

10 November 1941: Died in Baltimore, Maryland Hospital of a cerebral hemorrhage suffered the previous day while staying at a local hotel.

1941: James was living with his sister Jane M. Hoey at 135 Central Park West in New York, New York at the time of his death.

13 November 1941: Funeral mass at St. Paul the Apostle with 4,000 in attendance.

James was buried at the family plot in Calvary Cemetery, Queens, New York, New York.
