Presented Posthumously to Local Infantryman
(August 2, 1945) -- Technical Sgt. Patrick J. Hoey, 25, was killed in action on Dec.
14, while serving with the First Army in Germany.
Born in Long Island, Hoey lived with his aunt and uncle for 10 years in Belleville. Hoey
was wounded in Tunisia in 1943, and awarded the Legion of Merit. Hoey was also wounded
during the Normandy campaign. Acting Adjutant General Maj. Gen. Edward F. Witsell
presented the Silver Star and Bronze Star to the young soldier's aunt, Mrs. Daniel Hoey of
Prospect Street. The Silver Star was presented ''for distinguishing himself and disregard
for personal safety on Dec. 12, 1944, during the campaign ... which reflects highest
credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.'' The Bronze Star:
''...during the period July 5 1944, to Sept. 30, 1944, in the European Theatre of
operations ... took over as platoon sergeant when his platoon sergeant had a casualty.''
Hoey was inducted into the service January 1941.

TROY - Jane Anne Hoey Kelly, 64, wife of John F. Kelly and a former longtime resident of
Wynantskill, died Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at Samaritan Hospital. Born in Brooklyn, she
was the first daughter of Margaret Nippard Hoey of Troy and the late Owen Hoey. She was a
graduate of St. Brendan's School in Brooklyn and St. Anne's School in Rockville Center.
She received an Associate's Degree in graphic design from Farmingdale College in Long
Island, where she met her husband. They were married on April 30, 1960, at Holy Redeemer
Church in Long Island. Shortly after their wedding they moved to Wynantskill and Mrs.
Kelly enrolled at St. Rose College in Albany, where she earned a Summa Cum Laude Degree in
education and also completed her Master's Degree in education. Jane was an educator all
her life. She taught at the Pinewoods Center of the Rensselaer County ARC in Troy for 25
years, retiring in 2002. She also taught in the Special Education program at Carroll Hill
Elementary School in Troy. She continued to volunteer at Carroll Hill after she retired
and taught art classes at the Rensselaer County Council of Arts during the summer. She was
a Cub Scout leader in Wynantskill, taught CCD Sunday School for many years at St. Jude the
Apostle Church in Wynantskill and was a lector and Eucharistic Minister at St. Jude's the
past 10 years. Survivors, in addition to her husband and mother, include her children,
Brian Kelly of Guilderland, Patrick (Terri) Kelly of Nashville, TN, and Maureen Kelly of
Troy, her sisters, Patricia Heyser of Savannah, GA, and Margaret (Dennis) Demers of
Bohemia, Long Island, her brothers, Michael Hoey of Tampa, FL, and Owen Hoey of San
Francisco, CA. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Kelly and Kyle Halusic and Owen
and John Kelly and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff of
Hospice at Samaritan Hospital for making Jane Anne's stay there both comfortable and
spiritual. Funeral from the Thomas S. Connolly Funeral Home, 294 Whiteview Road,
Wynantskill, on Saturday at 8:45 a.m. and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Jude the Apostle Church in
Wynantskill, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Relatives and friends
are invited and may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. Donations to the
American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Road, Loudonville 12211 in memory of Mrs. Kelly would
be appreciated.
