Margaret Hoey: born in Co. Cork, Ireland June 5, 1836. Parents not listed. Married January 24, 1869 in Ossian, Iowa. Married and moved to farm near Waucoma where they lived until 17 years ago, when they moved to New Hampton. Mr. Hoey died May 11th, 1904. Seven children, three dead. Living are Miss Nell @ home, Mrs. Elizabeth (James) Cavanaugh of Lawler and Etta Hoey, also at home. There remains also, one sister, Miss Mary Carney of Lascascades, Panama. Funeral Tuesday, Oct. 2, 1917 from St. Joe's (New Hampton) Remains taken to St. Rose Cemetery northeast of Lawler, laid to rest by the side of those of her devoted husband and children.

Leonard Hoey

Leonard Hoey, 86, of Lawler and formerly of Waucoma, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of natural causes. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 10:30 a.m., at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler, with the Rev. Marvin Salz celebrating the mass. Lector for the services will be nephew Joe Scally. Casket bearers will be grandsons Kevin Hoey, Scott Hoey, David Riha, Christopher Hoey, John Eckenrod, Travis Wurzer and Keith Hoey. Honorary bearers will be grandsons Thomas Hoey, Jr., Brian Hoey, Ryan Hoey, Timothy Hoey, Mark Hoey, Jason Hoey and Michael Hoey. Burial will be at the St. Rose Cemetery of rural Waucoma. The Larkin-Martin-Hugeback Funeral Home is handing arrangements.

Leonard William Hoey was born Feb. 22, 1912, in Jackson Township of Winneshiek County, the son of Thomas and Sarah (Kelly) Hoey. He attended St. Mary's Grade School and graduated from Waucoma High School in 1931. On June 15, 1936, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler, he married Edna Shepherd. Leonard farmed west of Jackson Junction until 1976. During part of this time, he also was street commissioner for Jackson Junction. He had been a former member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waucoma and currently had been a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler.

Survivors include his wife, Edna; four sons, Thomas and Mary Anne Hoey of West Union, Patrick and Mary Ann Hoey of New Hampton, William and Kathy Hoey of New Hampton, and James and Elaine Hoey of Waucoma; two daughters, Regina and Francis Riha of Waucoma, and Mary Jane and Ronald Eckenrod of New Hampton; a son-in-law, Wayne Wurzer of Solon; 26 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren. Leonard Hoey was preceded in death, by his parents; one brother, Anthony Hoey, and six brothers in infancy; a daughter, Sally Wurzer; and two grandchildren, Karen Hoey and Todd Hoey.

15 July 2008: Patrick Leonard Hoey dies.

NEW HAMPTON - Patrick Leonard Hoey, 68, of New Hampton, died Tuesday, July 15, at Mercy Medical Center, New Hampton. He was born July 9, 1940, in Chickasaw County, son of Leonard and Edna Shepherd Hoey. On May 21, 1966, he married Mary Kipp at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Lawler. Mr. Hoey graduated from Waucoma High School in 1958, then served in the U.S. Army. He went to work at John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works in 1965, and retired after 38 years of service.

Survived by: his wife; two daughters, Lori (Jim) Klein of Greenwich, Conn., and Shelly Adams (Mike) of Cedar Rapids; three sons, Tim (Cindy) of Humble, Texas, Scott and Mark (Amy), both of Minneapolis; eight grandchildren; three brothers, Thomas (Mary Anne) of West Union, William (Kathy) of New Hampton and James (Elaine) of Waucoma; two sisters, Regina (Francis) Riha of Waucoma and Mary Jane (Ronald) Eckenrod of New Hampton; and a brother-in-law, Wayne (Diane) Wurzer of Solon. Preceded in death by:  a son, Todd; and a sister, Sally Wurzer.

Thomas Charles Hoey

Thomas Charles Hoey died June 16, 2009, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center from injuries sustained in a fall.

He was born Aug. 8, 1937, at New Hampton, the son of Leonard and Edna (Shepherd) Hoey. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Church in Waucoma. After graduating from Waucoma High School in 1955, Tom served his country in the United States Navy with the Navy Seabees. After his honorable discharge in 1959, Tom earned his plumbing license and began working at Schmitt Plumbing and Heating at Charles City. In 1965, he started as a foreman at Vick's Heating and Plumbing in Decorah until his retirement in 2004.

On March 3, 1962, Tom was united in marriage with Mary Anne Barloon at St. John's Church in Ft. Atkinson. To this union six children were born. During his life, Tom enjoyed being a member for 25 years of the West Union Fire Department, playing cards, fishing, mushroom hunting, playing pool, cheering on the Packers and Iowa Hawkeye's and spending time with his grandchildren. Preceding him in death was his daughter, Karen in 1964; his parents; his grandparents; his sister, Sally Wurzer in 1995 and his brother, Pat in 2008.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 47 years, Mary Anne; his five children and their spouses, Kevin (Janell) of Cottage Grove, Wis., Tom (Sue) of Jesup, Brian (Julie) of West Des Moines, Ryan (Jamie) of West Union and Katie of Lakewood, Calif.; 13 grandchildren, Sean, Erin, Briana, Riley, Tyler, Steffen, Alyssa, Kristin, Jordan, Mackenzie, Kelsey, Nolan and Brooklyn; two sisters, Jeanie (Francis) Riha of Waucoma and Mary Jane (Ron) Eckenrod of New Hampton; two brothers, Bill (Kathy) of New Hampton and Jim (Elaine) of Waucoma; and his many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial is Friday, June 19, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union. The Rev. Dale Rausch is officiating. Sue McDonough is organist. Hymns are "Here I Am Lord," "On Eagle's Wings," "Be Not Afraid" and "How Great Thou Art." Special music is "Come to Jesus" by Sue Hoey. Erin Hoey, Steffen Hoey and Riley Hoey and Mackenzie Hoey will place the pall. Altar servers are Briana Hoey and Jordan Hoey. Lectors were Francis Riha and Joe Scally. Eucharistic minister is Eleanor Martin. Jeanie Riha and Mary Jane Eckenrod are offertory gift bearers. Honorary casket bearers are all of Tom's grandchildren. Casket bearers are Sean Hoey, Tyler Hoey, Jack Barloon, Bill Hoey, Jim Hoey and Wayne Wurzer. Interment is at St. Rose Cemetery, Waucoma. Burnham-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
