Born 31 May 1878 in Zalogi, Plock, Poland (then Russia) to Feliks Zaloga and Waleria Ropelewska (or Rosalie Duvall). Stefan was the oldest of six children. His siblings included: Julius Peter Zaloga born about 1881; Adela Zaloga born about 1881; Stefania Zaloga born about 1881; Ludwig Zaloga born 1889; Kazimiera "Katherine" Zaloga born 1895. At the age of 32, Stefan immigrated to the United States arriving 23 April 1910 in New York on the S.S. Oldenburg. The Oldenberg left Bremen on **** and Stefan was ticketed in steerage class. The ship manifest indicates his father Josef Zaloga as a relative in the country of origin and his uncle **** as a point of contact in the US. *** was living at 38 23rd Street, Brooklyn, NY. Arrived with $50 in assets. The 1915 NY Census indicates Steve Zuoga [sic] living on David Whites Lane in Southampton. He is a boarder as are his brothers, Julius Zuoga [sic] and Louie [sic] (assumed to be Ludwig) Zuoga [sic]. All are listed as being born in Poland R. (presumed Russia), are Aliens, and Day Laborers. On 30 September 1918, Stefans brother Julius Zaloga was killed at Verdun, France in a battle during WW I. On 2 February 1919, Stefan married Rosalie Choinski at *** in Cambridge, MA. They lived in Southampton, Long Island. Eugenie was the first born to Stefan ** Zaloga(i) and Rozalie ** Choinska. After delivering Eugenie at Southampton Hospital in Southampton, Long Island, Rozalie and Stefan returned to their home at ******* Lewis Street, Southampton. Baptized at Our Lady of Poland Church in Southampton with Mrs. Wisnewski and uncle Walenty Choinski (lived on North Sea Road in Southampton) Walenty had a handle bar mustache and he never forgot Genes birthday. He grew flowers and sweet peas and used to give these to Gene. Stefan and Rozalie were recent immigrants to the United States. Stefan immigrated in 1914 and Rozalie in 1917. Both came through Ellis Island from Russian controlled Poland. Eugenie was first generation American. World War I (1914-1918) may have influenced their decision to leave Poland. On 11 October 1920, Stefans first son was born, Leonard Alfred Zaloga. When did you move to Rogers Ave. Bought Land in 1921 from the Rogers Family (Millicent). House built in 1922. Moved in the house in June/July 1922. Master carpenter named Gus Edwards. (son of Gus Edwards served with one of the Zaloga boys and was killed). On 16 September 1921, Eugenies first sister was born, Fencia Mary Lenore Zaloga. Stefan and Rozalies second son, Edmund Peter Zaloga was born on 21 December 1923. A son, Zygmunt Zaloga, was born about 1925. He died as an infant and little is known of him or his cause of death. On 4 July 1927, Ambrose Robert Zaloga was born. 22 September1928 Henry Charles Zaloga 15 Apr 1929 Albin Francis Zaloga Jerome Stephen Zaloga 23 April 1937 On 22 April 1937, Carolyn Rosalie Zaloga was born in Southampton. There is some family lore suggesting that Rozalie may have had some miscarriages or still born children but no confirming documentation has been found. The Zaloga and Choinski family had a number of relatives living on the eastern end of Long Island that were regular visitors to the Zaloga family home. 7 December 1942: Pearl Harbor attacked; United States enters WWII. 5 August 1948: Died in Southampton, Long Island, New York of cancer. A portion of his colon and part of his stomach had been removed in several operations prior to his death. He had been taking morphine to control the pain. Some believe that the cancer may have started in his prostate and had metastasized into his lower abdomen. He had been receiving treatment at Roosevelt Hospital in Manhattan. He was buried at ***** in Southampton. 1961: President Lyndon Johnson escalates the war in Vietnam. 12 April 1962: Wife Rozalie dies in Southampton, Long Island. What did she die of? She had been treated for diabetes and was taking insulin shots daily. Buried where? The family home on Rogers Avenue was sold for *** on *****. |
