1902 NY Times Story: SUICIDE OF WILLIAM HOEY
New Rochelle, NY, Feb 25-William Hoey, fifty nine years old, committed suicide at his home here Sunday, but the fact did not become known until yesterday. Mr. Hoey was a son of Mrs. John Hoey, the widow of John Hoey, one of the founders of Adams Express Company. Mrs. Hoey was twice married. Her first husband was William Russell. After her second marriage the name of her son by the first marriage was changed to Hoey by act of Legislature.
  Mr Hoey shot himself twice in the breast some time on Sunday night. He was found in bed unconscious, but very weak by his wife yesterday morning. Dr. C. N. Raymond was summoned but Mr. Hoey died twelve hours after being found.
  Mr. Hoey was connected with the Adams Express Company for about forty years. He resigned from the company seven years ago owing to ill health. He took a trip abroad without benefit. He had frequent attacks of melancholia, and it is supposed suffered from one of these when he shot himself. Mr. Hoey was a member of many clubs. His widow if the daughter of the late Charles Chamberlain of Long Branch. Mr. Hoey is survived by one son and one daughter.

William Hoey of New Rochelle was a summer resident of Long Branch and he owned some property there. He died recently and in order to properly settle up his property the will had to be probated in this county. Mr. Hoey left all his property of every kind to his wife, “knowing” as he said, “that she will provide for and take care of our children.” In case she should die before him, then he left all his property in trust to Winfield Scott B. Parker of Long Branch to be used for the support and care of his two children, Beatrice Hoey and William Hoey, Jr. Mr. Hoey’s wife Madeline was made the executor of the will, but in case she died before him then this duty was to fall on Mr. Parker. The will was made Mary 11th, 1901, and was witnessed by George W. VanGelder and Stephen T. VanGelder.
