Charles decided on VPI as a result of being introduced to the university by his sister Mary's boyfriend, a class of '33 graduate. 6 June 1940: Graduated from VPI with a BS in Mechanical Engineering with Aeronautical option. 1940: Bought first automobile, a 1940 black Chevrolet 6-cylinder Coupe. The only option purchased was a spotlight. Get receipt from Charles' file. June 1940-Sept 1940: Glenview Naval Air Station, Glenview, IL. Sept 1940-Feb 1941: Maxwell Field, Alabama. Was rated pilot in class 41-A, So. East Air Corp Training Center. Feb 1941-Jan 1942: Hamilton Field, San Rafael, CA First assignment was in P-40s at Hamilton AAF and immediately on outbreak of war assigned to Glendale AF, CA. Assigned to 71st Pursuit Squadron, 1st Pursuit Group, at Glendale and checked out in P-38s at Muroc Field. Flew across North Atlantic in P-38s into England and ETO. Finished combat tour of 83 missions with 75 of them in P-47. Surgery performed at the Richmond Veterans Administration Hospital. 5 October 1999: Attended wedding of his son Arthur Hoey to Kathleen Louise Ferrell in Columbia, South Carolina. November 1999: Diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme, an aggressive cancerous tumor of the brain. Charles elected not to seek treatment. 17 December 1999: Died at home in arms of his son, daughter, and spouse in Richmond, Virginia.
