Family story is that he died from one of two causes. The first story is that he was
driving his trolley across the Harrison Avenue bridge one winter when he saw someone
apparently trying to commit suicide, jump into the Passaic River. He stopped the
trolley and jumped into the river saving the person. Charles died of pneumonia as a
result of his lifesaving efforts. The second story is that he was involved in a
trolley accident. While driving down Market Street in Newark, he failed to stop for
a railroad crossing. The trolley was hit by a train and many people were hurt.
He was put in jail for neglect. His days in the cold damp jail brought on the TB
that he later died from.
